GREATER TRAIL HOME OF CHAMPIONS REGISTRY

DESIGNATION CRITERIA

The Greater Trail Home of Champions Society was established in 1996 to prepare a registry of “Champions” from the Greater Trail area. The names of these “Champions” are displayed on the Home of Champions Monument located in the 900 block of Farwell Street in downtown Trail BC.

The designation as a "Champion" will:

  • Recognize a person for having made a significant contribution to the communities of Greater Trail; or,
  • Recognize a person for having reached a significant level of achievement in his/her chosen field of endeavour.

There are three categories in which the “Champion” may be grouped: Sports, Lifestyle and Business/Science. The following criteria must be met for a person to be eligible for designation as a “Champion”.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

The person being nominated must have:

  • Been born in the Greater Trail area or spent a substantial period of their childhood adolescence in the Greater Trail area; or,
  • Been a resident of the Greater Trail area for a substantial period of time during the period of his/her achievement.

SPORTS

There are three categories for the Sports.

Athlete

A person must have:

  • excelled at the national or international level; and/or
  • brought benefits, recognition and pride to their community in the Greater Trail area; or,
  • brought benefits, recognition and pride to their community in the Greater Trail area; and/or,
  • achieved significant or extraordinary success in their sport.

Note: A person participating in a team sport may be recognized individually if he/she made an significant contribution to the success of the team.

Builder (includes coaches, managers, officials, administrators, volunteers)

A person must have:

  • made an significant contribution to a sport or sports; and/or,
  • showed leadership in his/her position; and/or,
  • made a significant contribution to the advancement of sport in their community or the Greater Trail area.
Team

A team must have:

  • won a national or international championship.

LIFESTYLE AND PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT

There are three categories for Lifestyle and Personal Achievement.

Public Service

A person meet one or two of the following criteria:

  • participated in a notable project of national or international significance; and/or,
  • appointed to a position of leadership at the head of a prominent Provincial or National government organization or department; and/or,
  • appointed to a position of leadership at the head of a prominent Provincial or National non-government or not for profit organization (eg: union, church, educational body); and/or,
  • made a significant contribution to one of the public service examples noted above.
Professional and Career Achievement

A person must meet one or two of the following criteria:

  • excelled in a field of endeavor at the national or international level; and/or,
  • be acknowledged and recognized by their peers and/or the public for his/her contribution to advancements in their field of endeavour; and/or,
  • made a significant contribution to advancements in their field of endeavour which is recognized nationally or internationally.
The Arts

A person must meet one or two of the following criteria:

  • received outstanding artistic recognition at the provincial, national or international level; and/or,
  • had a publication of a significant literary work; and/or,
  • had an exhibition of a work(s) at the provincial, national or international level; and/or,
  • made a significant contribution to the production of a national or international release/broadcast for film or a television program.
BUSINESS/SCIENCE

A person must have:

  • established a business of provincial, national or international proportion; and/or,
  • has been appointed to a position of leadership as a head of a business or industry of national or international status; and/or,
  • made a significant impact as a business leader and be recognized as a business leader; and/or,
  • demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit and have a record of significant entrepreneurial achievement and/or be recognized by his/her organization or profession as having made a significant contribution to the success of the organization or profession in support of business excellence; and/or,
  • must have contributed in an exceptional way to the advancement of science or engineering nationally or internationally.

NOMINATION PROCEDURES FOR RECOGNITION AS A "CHAMPION"

Nominations for recognition as a “Champion” of the Greater Trail area must be made on the form prepared for that purpose.

The nomination must be submitted in original form. No faxes or emails will be accepted.

A recent photo of the nominee is required to be submitted with the nomination form (head and shoulders) which will not be returned. (Nominees may be deceased, however a photo is still required).

If the nominee is recognized by the Board of the Society as a “Champion” he/she will be required to sign a release that will:

  • provide his/her consent to allow use of any biographical information submitted with the nomination in a public record and to use his/her name in a public display;
  • waive any personal rights in connection with the use of the records, promotion or display of his/her name by the Society for its purposes;
  • hold the Greater Trail Home of Champions Society, the Trail Historical Society and the City of Trail harmless from any action or claim resulting from the use of his/her name by any or all of these organizations.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • The Greater Trail Home of Champions Registry of Champions will be posted on the website of the Trail Historical Society and on their information kiosk in the Sports Hall of Memories in the Trail Memorial Centre.
  • The Home of Champions Registry is held by the Trail Historical Society who is responsible for its care and the use of the information contained in the Registry.
  • The Trail Historical Society is responsible for the maintenance of the Registry.
  • Persons nominated as Champions of Greater Trail will be recognized by a plaque on the Home of Champions Monument in downtown Trail BC.
